Scrub measurement tolerances define the permitted variation around an agreed garment dimension. They help the buyer and factory evaluate whether a sample or production piece matches the specification, but they only work when everyone measures the same point in the same way. A tolerance copied from another style can create confusion or allow a fit change the buyer never intended. These seven rules explain how to connect measurement limits with the garment design, size chart, care condition and approval process, using simple examples without prescribing universal limits.
Understand what scrub measurement tolerances control

Keep four ideas separate: the body measurement describes the wearer, wearing ease contributes to the intended garment fit, a grade rule changes dimensions between sizes, and tolerance allows a defined variation around a garment target. Rule 1: Define the measurement method before the limit
Describe where each measurement starts and ends, whether it follows a curve or a straight line, and how the garment is arranged. ISO 18890 addresses garment measurement points and methods; its public scope also allows additional points to be agreed by the parties. Record the plus tolerance and minus tolerance clearly for each relevant dimension. A symmetrical example might use a target of 60 centimetres with an allowed variation of 1 centimetre in either direction, giving a range from 59 to 61 centimetres. Some dimensions may require different permitted variation above and below the target, if agreed for the product. Rule 3: Select limits by function and construction
Review each critical dimension in relation to the garment’s intended fit and use. Neck openings, pocket access, rise, sleeve dimensions and overall lengths may have different consequences when they vary. Enter the actual measurement beside the target and calculate sample deviation using a consistent sign convention. For example, actual minus target makes a positive result larger than the target and a negative result smaller.
